John Harper

John Harper December 09, 2021   This happened around 200 years ago. A small boy reached New York, looking out for a job. He ailed from a simple Christian family and knew only the vocation associated with a printing press. He took constant effort, utilizing his limited skills in the printing press to come up in life.   He managed to get a job at a reputed printing office. He was sincere in all the tasks assigned to him and discharged his duties with utmost sincerity. Even in his lowly state, he loved God. One Saturday evening he was given an important task at work. He realised that in order to complete that task, he would have to work on the following day being a Sunday as well. He approached his supervisor and requested him that he will work even until midnight but would not be able to work on the next day, as it is God’s Day.     His supervisor listened to him but told him vehemently that he would have to lose his job, if he would not complete that task the next day. The little lad, on the contrary went to the company’s boss and said humbly,” Sir, I have been honouring Sunday from my early years. Even if I have to forego this job, I am not willing to dishonour Sunday”.   Though the boss stared intently at the little boy as he was determined to revere God, by honouring Sunday, he did not force the little boy to work on Sundays afterwards. That little boy was John Harper.   John Harper in his later days became a famous missionary. John Harper, who started his life as a simple press employee, was blessed by God to become the founder of a company that published spiritual books. Do we give up God for our selfishness? Let’s seek forgiveness from God today and live our lives for Him.

KARTHAAR SINGH

KARTHAAR SINGH September 29, 2021   Karthar Singh was born in Punjab to wealthy Sikh parents.  His father was a big zamindar in their place. He was the only son and his family’s greatest hope.He was brought up in great wealth. He was trained in all kinds of skills by his father.  Though he did not get any kind of religious training he always had an eagerness to know about these things in his heart. When he came to know about Christianity,  he was attracted by the Christian doctrines . And he publicly declared himself as a Christian.  And as a result he was chased away from his own home.   He became a manual laborer for his own basic needs like food and clothes. Very soon he started sharing the good news in the villages and towns in Punjab. After doing so in many places around Punjab he crossed the huge mountains with great difficulty and took the good news to Tibet, the dark country. The Buddhist monks were filled with rage when they heard the name of Jesus Christ. There was no one to welcome or help Karthaar in that cruel land. But he still made a decision to not leave the place without sharing the good news.  Though the people of Tibet tried to chase him away and made many vicious plans against him he still went around the streets sharing the word of God.  Finally he was charged with entering Tibet without  permission from the government and for spreading a foreign religion and was taken before their leader. He was granted death punishment but he went with them for the fulfillment of the death penalty without any hesitation. He kept preaching the gospel to the people who had gathered around as they took him to be killed.  One of the men in the crowd was touched by his words and was saved.     When they reached the execution place, they stripped away his clothes,  made him naked and stitched him to a wet buffalo and left him in the sun. A huge crowd was there and were making fun looking at the way he was struggling.  He was in great pain and was struggling inside the dried, shrinking buffalo skin. The people did not care about Karthar and were totally oblivious to the sound of his breaking bones and were laughing aloud. On the third day he requested them to untie his arms to take the new Testament that was near him. With great difficulty he wrote the following lines in the Bible:   Is this a death bed of a Christian? No. This is the place where death dies. Will the love I have for Christ, reduce? I’m only giving back the life he gave me. Though I truthfully did my best still I could not do everything. These were the words he wrote.  More importantly he praised God when he was about to die. Finally,  as he breathed his last he said ,” Lord Jesus! I submit my spirit in your hands.”   One of the officers in the crowd that was Karthaar’s final moments took the old testament to his house and accepted Christ after reading it.

Dr. Clara Swain

Dr. Clara Swain September 05, 2021    On 1834 July 18th, Dr. Clara Swain was born in New York. Her father, John Swain was of Irish descent and her mother Clarissa came from the dynasty of New England. Clara joined the Methodist church when she was eight. She began teaching private pupils in her 21st age as she continued her religious studies and subsequently moved to Canandaigua, New York. As she repeatedly encountered and cared for sick people, she developed an interest in learning medicine. She continued her medical studies in Castille’s Sanatorium where she went on to earn her degree as well.   Clara came to India in 1870 as she embraced God’s calling for her. She started her medical mission in Uttar Pradesh in the district of Bareilly. In those days, she was one of the very first women who came by sea to carry out medical mission work in India. It was necessary in those times where a lady doctor was needed to provide medical assistance to women of higher class. Even though, Clara had difficulty with learning the Indian language, she learnt and strived with earnest.     Within a year, she had treated at least 1300 patients. During the next four years, she would go on to provide exceptional medical help for women and children. She earned the name “Pioneer Woman Physician in India”. She went on to open an women-exclusive hospital in Bareilly in 1873. Although there had been resistance toward Christianity in those days, the Islamic king, the Nawab was inspired by the works of Clara that he donated lands for the hospital and encouraged her mission. This hospital spreads over 40 acres. She even established nurse training centres that led to the empowerment of skilled nurses grounded in the Christian faith. She treated more than 7000 patients in the year 1880 alone.   In 1885, she served the Queen of Rajput as her special doctor. Clara worked fervently to help people realise the love of Christ when she held such an honourable position. There were many who accepted Christ Jesus as their Saviour and Lord. After almost 27 years of medical mission in India, Clara spent her last days in Castile, New York. She went on to be with the Lord on December 25, 1910 and her remains are laid to rest in Grace Cemetery. Clara shined in every opportunity God provided her with and made even her highest social standing as a step closer to spreading God’s love.   Today, How do we utilise the opportunities that God gives us?

John Bunyan

John Bunyan September 17, 2021   John Bunyan was born in November of 1628 at Bedford in England. His parents were not Christians. From an early age, he followed his ancestral work of tinkering and sale of pots and pans alongside his father. He did not have a proper education as he was born in a poor family. Bunyan had to give up his school education to help manage the financial troubles at home. He was very wicked in his youth. He lied, stole, cheated people and disrespected the elders. He joined the military when he was 16 years old. He found no peace in his life. He was in the army only for a couple of years when he returned to marry a faithful Christian girl as a 19-year-old lad. She shared about Christ often to John. In order to impress his young bride, John Bunyan began to attend church and slowly parted his wicked ways. Yet he didn’t whole-heartedly submit to Christ. One day when he was roaming through the streets with his signage for tinkering, he heard three women preaching the Gospel on his way. John Bunyan went home that day having heard the Word of God and dedicated his time to reading the Bible with focus. He was touched as he read the Holy book and came to realise how evil he had been until then. On a day when he was feeling weak and sore, he was reading the book of Martin Luther and he submitted to Jesus Christ with his whole heart.   John Bunyan’s dear wife passed away within a short period of his acceptance of Christ. A heart-broken Bunyan realised that only his Saviour can help him until the end. He dedicated his life to Christ and volunteered to do whatever he could for the Lord. He started sharing the good news in the houses where he was mending the pots and pans. Not only did his business grow but a lot of people turned to Christ due to his word.       In those days, a law was in force in England that restricted the responsibility of preaching to the priests alone. Although John was not intent on breaking the law, he considered obedience to Christ much more important. Therefore, he did not stop what he was doing. One day police arrested him citing that law and took him to a Judge. The Judge told Bunyan that he will release him if he were to promise not to preach any longer. But John was not willing to make that promise and thus he landed a 3-month long imprisonment. John went on to make a statement saying, “If I was released today, I will preach the word of God tomorrow”. His 3-month imprisonment went on for 12 years. He could have been released at any point of those 12 years but on one condition. He only had to promise that he will not be preaching anymore. In prison, he had to share a small, dirty, dark cell with 50 other men. The diseases spread fast because of the lack of space and many died due to that. John Bunyan tolerated all of the discomforts of prison, his estrangement from his four children and lack of contact with the outside world. He never wasted a minute in prison and spent his time praying, reading the Bible and writing. It is there that he wrote his best book, “The Pilgrim’s Progress”.   John was released from prison when he was 43 years old. He continued his missionary work for 16 years at the Baptist church of Bedford following the requests of people.   John invested his time in helping his church members and their families to resolve their family issues and helped them to live rooted in Christ. On August 13, 1688, John Bunyan passed away at his 59th year, leaving this Earth to meet his beloved Lord in heaven. Pastor John Bunyan is not with us today. But the book,” The Pilgrim’s Progress” he created is still leading masses to Christ even today. In addition to the Bible, His book has been translated to more than 130 languages and is much loved and read by many. The Lord does not require people with wit and skill to do his work, he needs only simple people with devotion and submission. The Lord who makes historical events with the simple, yet devoted to Christ is sure to create history with you.

William Ault

William Ault September 09, 2021 William Ault was born to a British shoemaker Jabez Ault in 1778. His parents raised him as a godly young man. Before the age of 7, William had already completed reading the Bible 6 times. Ault ran a Sunday School in his neighborhood. Later, in 1808, he became a Methodist Preacher in England and thus began to serve the Lord. In a particular week, he would minister at more than 25 places, preaching Christ. When William heard that Srilanka has never heard of Christ and doesn’t have a Christian preacher, he felt led by the Holy Spirit to go to Srilanka. He sought permission from the Missionary Society to be sent to Srilanka. They responded that permission was granted only to missionaries who were married. William married Sarah whom he knew was the Lord’s choice for him. Both were committed to serving the Lord in Srilanka. They journeyed to Srilanka on the 5th day of their marriage as planned by the Missionary Society. On 31st December 1813, the mission crew traveled together by a steamer. On the third day of their journey, the ship was severely tossed by a storm. Some of the passengers were injured due to the ship being tossed by the heavy winds. Even his wife Sarah was greatly weakened by the turmoil. Neither was immediate medical help available to her nor could they return to England. She endured the suffering for 5 weeks at the end of which she entreated her husband to sing a devotional and pray for her. As they both were singing, Sarah’s life departed. The captain of the ship suggested to William to bury his wife at the nearest land which William refused. He requested that she be let down in the sea as he did not want to return to England at any cost. He firmly believed that he would not go back on the path laid down before him. He continued on his journey and after 6 months, he reached the city of Batticaloa where he began his missionary service.  In two months’ time, he learnt sufficient Tamil to be able to minister to the people in Tamil during the Sunday Service. The inhabitants at Batticaloa weren’t as civilized or cultured as we see them today. They were, in fact, backward and uneducated. Most of them were farmers and cultivated vegetables. The simple people were patiently waiting for their vegetable harvest just as William Ault was waiting for the heavenly seed to take root in them and produce a harvest. From his humble shanty, the beautiful stars seemed to smile and twinkle at him. But it was infested with mosquitoes. Bread and butter were scarce and milk was unheard of. Not one day did William regret the lack of supply. In his letter to his mother, he wrote that he was happy for whatever was available within his reach and was thankful to the Lord for those. Back in England, he was a wealthy man but here, he was walking the lanes of Batticaloa doing missionary service. To reach the villages, he often had to use boats. He spotted young men who were found in groups and helped them receive an education. He started a school in which there were just 5 students initially. In 8 months, there were eight schools in eight villages. He even opened a College to help them learn English. The greatest secret of his success was his close relationship with the Lord. He slept as little as 3 hours a day and often spent the remaining 21 hours in communion with the Father and doing His great service. The scarce 3 hours weren’t restful. He was bitten by mosquitoes and poisonous insects which often weakened him. On the 1st of April 1815, he asked his dear friend to read the 3rd chapter of Jeremiah. His life departed as the friend was reading to him and William was just 37 years old. He served for less than eight months but has left an indelible history of mission service at Batticaloa. The students who graduated from the school hold high status in society and are honorable men. The school produced many leaders. His mission service produced much impact in the neighborhood of Batticaloa. Let us ponder and think whom we live for. There were many reasons for William Ault to back out of service to the Lord. But he chose to serve the Lord at any cost. Today our lives are in the hands of the Lord. Even if it is a day, let us live a life exalting the Lord. Let us surrender our talents, gifts, time and strength to the Lord as we submit ourselves to bring glory to the Lord.

Corrie Ten Boom

Corrie Ten Boom September 01, 2021   Corrie Ten Boom was born and raised in Holland by her father, since her mother died early. Her father was a clock maker. In 1940, many Jews took refuge in Holland during the Second World War fearing the German Soldiers who were trying to exterminate them. Some of them were caught by the soldiers and imprisoned. More than 700 Jews were put in prison that could barely hold more than 200 prisoners.   Corrie Ten Boom took courage and rescued Jews who were haunted by the German soldiers and gave them a hiding place.  However, it was not long and in 1943, Corrie Ten Boom, her aging father, and her sister were imprisoned for helping the Jews. They were sent to a Nazi Concentration Camp where they had to endure much suffering. In that gloomy prison of 700 prisoners, only the three of them had accepted Christ. Corrie and her sister Betsie underwent immeasurable torture. They were stripped naked and paraded before others, were hungry and thirsty most of the time. Soon, her father and her sister both succumbed and died. Corrie was all by herself now, but spent significant part of her time worshipping the Lord without bringing herself to attention before the German soldiers. She shared the gospel to the women prisoners and her Dutch Bible that she had came in handy to share the good news. The Lord used Corrie mightily even during her prison term.     Finally, Corrie was released on the same day the Second World War ended. She began to spread the love of Christ to all the people. She also established an orphan house for those who were orphaned during the World War. She shared the comfort of Christ during her most turbulent times. This strengthened many in the Lord as she taught how to stand in the Lord during times of trouble. She traveled to several countries preaching this.  We are called not only to be ready for the coming of Christ but also to stand steadfast during challenging times and in needed to die a martyr, she said. Once while preaching at a church in Africa, a few Christians were taken by the police and killed. The new government rules were against the Church. On the second day, a few more were killed. Similarly, on the third day, they heard that half of the Christians in a church had been killed. Fear struck the small church where Corrie began to preach boldly on the fourth day.  They feared if they would be found and killed. Corrie preached on staying faithful until the end even if it means dying for Christ. On the fifth day, all of them were taken and killed. The only difference was that they faced the situation with great boldness and were happy to be? martyred for Christ.   Once while preaching in Europe, she spoke on forgiveness and love and how it shows the way to a life of peace and security. At the end of the sermon, she closed her eyes for the prayer and when she opened it, she saw a huge man standing before her.  She was shocked by the towering German and asked him what he wanted. He said that he was the Nazi soldier who had killed her father and sister. He also said that he came to ask for her forgiveness because she was preaching on love and forgiveness for all. “Will you forgive me”, he asked. She was filled with dreadful hate and loathed the idea of forgiveness to a murderer. The Lord gently reminded her if she would only preach on forgiveness and not follow it? She held his hands immediately when she heard the Lord speak and forgave him from the bottom of her heart. He went back a forgiven man with boundless happiness.   Corrie wrote a book on her experiences. The book “The Hiding Place” was also made into a movie. Here was a woman mightily used by the Lord. Finally, on the same day that she was born, Corrie died – 15th April 1983. One bible verse comforted her every day during her lifetime. But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. (1 Peter 3: 14) .  This is the question before us. Are we steadfast in faith in the Lord? Are we so wearied out by life’s troubles? Or do we stand for Christ at all times? Let us ponder these questions as we submit ourselves to Him.

Power in the blood of Jesus

Power in the blood of Jesus September 01, 202    “A rattlesnake bit one of my sheep in the face about a week ago. Deadliest snake that lives around here. The sheep’s face swelled up and hurt her terribly. But the old rattlesnake didn’t know the kind of blood that flows through the sheep. Anti-venom is most often made from sheep’s blood. The sheep swelled for about 2 days but the blood of the lamb destroyed the venom of the serpent. I was worried but the sheep didn’t care. She kept on eating, kept on drinking and kept on climbing because she knew she was alright.  Often the serpents of this life will reach out and bite us. They inject their poison into us but they cannot overcome the Blood of the Lamb of God that washes away the sin of the world and the sting of death. Don’t worry about the serpent or his bite, just make sure that the Lamb’s Blood is flowing through your veins.”
